EatSafe SG is an initiative that aims to provide a common language for everyone involved in the care of individuals with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) when communicating about dysphagia diets and modified fluids. Its main objective is to ensure safety for these individuals.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) Singapore Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Committee comprising nursing home leaders, speech therapists, dietitians, administrators, Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) representatives and medical advisor recommended the implementation of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework (www.iddsi.org) across healthcare institutions and community care services in Singapore. The IDDSI Framework is a globally standardised framework of diet and fluid terminologies and descriptors to describe texture modified foods and thickened fluids used for individuals with dysphagia.

The Singapore Allied Health Workplace Learning and Support outlines five principles aim to

(i) Ensure that workplace learning and support are universally accessible, deeply ingrained in the organizational culture, focused on enhancing professional skills and overall wellbeing, characterised by high quality, and continuously improved to meet the evolving needs of allied health workers and the community they serve

(ii) Guide individuals, employers, and the wider system in creating a dynamic and supportive learning environment that enhances the skills and wellbeing of allied health workers and contributes to safe and effective practices and better outcomes for service users.

These principles should be used alongside professional and regulatory standards, not as a replacement, and are relevant to everyone in healthcare, including educational settings where allied health workers are integrated. All organisations are encouraged to follow these principles.

Telepractice in speech and language therapy is the remote provision of speech and language therapy services using technology. These may include the delivery of assessment, intervention, and/or consultation services to clients, carers, clinicians, or others.

There are currently no national allied health-specific guidelines for telepractice in Singapore. SALTS has put together this resource page for Singapore speech and language therapists looking to engage in telepractice.

Given the high attrition rate and turnover of allied health professionals, this survey seeks to understand the career needs and concerns of speech therapists in Singapore as well as factors affecting job retention.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to the SALTS Speech Therapy Job Satisfaction and Career Concerns 2024 survey. We really appreciate your answers and we will be analysing the responses. We hope to publish the results in Q3 2024.

We aim to publish the fully anonymised, aggregated results on this page in collaboration with NUS Speech Pathology faculty members. Further, we aim to engage relevant organisations (e.g. Ministry of Health) with the findings to improve career satisfaction for speech therapists.
