Cough Reflex Testing: Integrating a New Tool Into Clinical Practice

  Workshop Outline Developing pneumonia after stroke is associated with increased mortality. Our current clinical swallowing evaluation is not able to effectively identify silent aspiration and literature has shown that the inclusion of a cough reflex test can decrease pneumonia rates in dysphagic patients. A cough reflex test may identify those with reduced cough sensitivity and therefore those patients who are at risk of silent aspiration.
