Social Comm SIG: Assessment in Social Communication
August 16 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm$10 – $35
How do we assess something as expansive, dynamic, involved, people sensitive and context dependent as Social Communication? Language and Social Communication are interrelated. How do we reconcile standardized test findings with what we see informally in the individual and know intuitively about them? We struggle to organize our informal observations into meaningful frameworks. And so, we remain compelled to use standardized tests scores to ensure evidence based practice. Our goals in intervention cannot be relevant and functional to the individual if we do not integrate the two. We can only assess something we have defined clearly.
In this talk, we will define language as it relates to social. We will emphasize the unique qualities of dynamic assessment, as an approach that leads directly to intervention.
Our objectives include to:
- Define and describe language as a social code
- Understand language competence as the integration of language content, form and use
- Identify the tenets of dynamic assessment
- Know WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)
- Study examples of assessment data in speech therapy, consistent with ICF framework
(We will explore examples from across ‘disability’ classifications that pertain to children as well as adults. The Social Communication SIG takes a ‘lifespan’ focus.)
Come be part of this intensely stimulating talk, that will set the stage for upcoming Social Communication SIG events.
