Workshop Description: Makaton is language programme that uses signs and symbols alongside speech to support understanding and expressive skills for people with communication difficulties. It was originally aimed at people with an intellectual disability and is now used widely in the UK with people with a range of communication difficulties as well as to support language development in very young children. These 2 days are a practical introduction to Makaton. Participants will learn signs & symbols from Stages 1 to 4 and the additional stage from the Core Vocabulary. There is discussion around what Makaton is, commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use, and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or at work. With lots of practical exercises, the aim is for participants to leave feeling confident to use signs and symbols in a functional way in their home or at work.
Who should attend: This course is suitable for professionals, parents and carers who need to use Makaton at home and / or in their work.
