Basic & Advanced Learn to Play

July 15 - July 18

1) BASIC LEARN TO PLAY

Get Trained in ‘Learn to Play’

Pretend play itself is complex and closely tied to the development of social competence, narrative language, self-regulation, creativity and problem solving. Often, one of the primary symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, language delay or developmental delay is the disruption of one’s ability to develop complex play. It follows therefore that a strong understanding of development stages and types of play, as well as the components of play behaviour would be absolutely necessary for therapists to bring about real changes and efficacy in their intervention treatment.

Prof. Karen Stagnitti will bring us through two days of hands on, practical training that would also include administering the Pretend Play Assessment.

2) ADVANCED LEARN TO PLAY

What you will take away

In this evidenced based therapy technique training, participants are assumed to have prior knowledge in the development and assessment of Pretend Play. Participants of Advanced Learn to play are introduced to the framework which surrounds Learn to Play Therapy, as well as its theoretical underpinnings.

The play room is discussed, and advanced processes and principles are covered and practised, including further therapeutic skills to engage children in play such as tracking empathic reflections, holding, limit setting and congruence.

Participants will also learn how to administer the Animated Movie Test (for young people aged 8 years to 11 years). This test measures how the young person sets up and prepares for a complex task, their ability to sequence events and generate problems and sub-plots, initiate and create cohesive texts and plots. It also looks at the emotional engagement in the task, use of vocabulary and language, use of symbols and representational thinking. Participants also take home the test kit for Animated Movie Test.

Over the 2-day workshop several case studies are worked through from assessment to planning therapy sessions. The workshop focuses on practical problem solving of difficult cases, such as autism spectrum disorder, and children who are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorders. Throughout the 2-day workshop, expect to be engaged in lively brainstorming sessions, workshop play activities, and hands on simulated therapy sessions with other fellow professionals.
