What you will take away
In this evidenced based therapy technique training, participants are assumed to have prior knowledge in the development and assessment of Pretend Play and have attended the Basic Learn to Play Workshop. Participants of Advanced Learn to play are introduced to the framework which surrounds Learn to Play Therapy, as well as its theoretical underpinnings.
The play room is discussed, and advanced processes and principles are covered and practised, including further therapeutic skills to engage children in play such as tracking empathic reflections, holding, limit setting and congruence.
Participants will also learn how to administer the Animated Movie Test (for young people aged 8 years to 11 years). This test measures how the young person sets up and prepares for a complex task, their ability to sequence events and generate problems and sub-plots, initiate and create cohesive texts and plots. It also looks at the emotional engagement in the task, use of vocabulary and language, use of symbols and representational thinking.
Over the 2-day workshop several case studies are worked through from assessment to planning therapy sessions. The workshop focuses on practical problem solving of difficult cases, such as autism spectrum disorder, and children who are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorders.
Prof. Karen Stagnitti will bring us through a comprehensive understanding on the benefits of play therapy and its key role in a child’s development. There will also be opportunities for participants to practice on real cases presented to train competency in administering the PPDEC. Participants will also learn to administer this assessment tools for younger children.
